Plumbing vents?

Julie Sep 24, 2015 07:15PM MDT

I've noticed that none of your finished models have venting pipes coming from the roof other than those for the propane stoves. How are you venting the plumbing for gray/black water? Is the venting not necessary on the tiny house, or is the vent somewhere else that isn't readily visible in pictures? Thanks for your help on this!

Hi Julie,

All of our models do indeed having plumbing vents. I am assuming the pictures you have seen just aren't in the right angle.

What else may I help you with?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Hi Emma,

Good question! So interestingly enough, really no heat should be lost through these vents. If you think about water that goes down your drain, it first encounters a 'p-trap'. This bend in the pipe holds water all the time. Just downstream from this p-trap is 'tee' that intersects a vertical pipe which carries the liquid waste down, while continuing toward the roof as a vent. Since there is water in the p-trap, air is not able to travel down your drain to that tee, and then up the vent pipe to the outside of the house. The water in the p-trap blocks the constant airflow that you're concerned about.

Are they necessary? Well, we certainly recommend them, although I know of a couple of tiny houses that did not vent their plumbing yet things flow ok (though you should expect some 'gurgling' or slow draining sometimes if you choose not to vent).

Here is a link to an image to help explain that paragraph of text above. http://i.stack.imgur.com/pCHOx.jpg

Please let me know if I need to clarify further or if there is anything else we can help you with.

Safe building,
Matt
